SUMMER PROGRAMME 2009

1. Saturday, May 16th  - EXCURSION
 ‘GORGE-US-TILES!’                           (Pick-up times B)

 A coffee stop will be made at Moreton Garden Centre and on arrival at the Ironbridge Gorge the visit will start at the Gorge Museum. On leaving this a walk along pavements of about ½ mile will lead to the famous Bridge – the first cast-iron bridge in the world.   At 2.15pm by coach to the Jackfield Tile Factory and Museum.  A picnic lunch is suggested though there are cafés in Ironbridge village. Boots are not needed. Admission fees are £2.25 for the Gorge Museum and £5.20 for the Tile Museum.

2. Sunday, May 17th   Registration needed - WALK

BLUEBELL WALK                                                 3miles

This walk is part of the Prestatyn Walking Festival whose theme this year is ‘Pre-Romans in NE Wales’.  A moderate circular walk through fields, woodland and green lanes with observations on flora and the area. Good views over the Dee Estuary and a visit to an Iron-Age barrow, maybe with an archaeologist.

Bring walking boots, waterproofs and a drink.

Cars leave Prestatyn Church Car Park at 1pm or meet at Gronant Institute SJ092831 at 1.15pm.

3. Saturday, May 30th                                       VISIT

 CONSERVATION PROJECTS AT BEECHES FARM

 A visit to Beeches Farm, off Flint Road, Saltney Ferry, hosted by Mrs Anne Wrench who will guide a tour around a variety of on-going conservation projects. These include those concerned with tree-sparrows, hares and ‘The Lapwing Recovery Project’. The circular walk of about 2 miles will encompass arable land, hay-meadow, wooded areas, marsh reedbeds and a length alongside the tidal River Dee. 

Bring packed lunch, strong footwear, waterproofs and binoculars. Flat walking but it may be muddy.

4. Saturday, June 13th                                    EXCURSION

 PRESIDENT’S OUTING:                       (Pick-up times A)

 ABERYSTWYTH AND NANT YR ARIAN

 After a brief coffee stop at the Visitor Centre in Bala the coach will arrive at the longest electric Cliff Railway in Britain to ascend Constitution Hill. The clifftop views are extensive and even more impressive from the Camera Obscura at the top - the largest in the world - and next to a café! Returning down the railway a walk of a little less than ½ mile will reach the CeredigionMuseum in the former Coliseum Theatre. Promptly at 2.00pm the coach will leave here for the Nant-yr-Arian Visitor Centre where a short walk will reach the best viewpoint at 3pm to see the Red Kites being fed. There are also lakeside walks and a café.

Admissions: Cliff Railway - £1.50 (to be collected on the coach); Camera Obscura - £1.00; others free.

Packed lunch essential. Boots not needed.

5. Saturday, June 27th                                       WALK

 CAERGWRLE AND HOPE                                      4 miles

 A gentle circular walk through villages and along the banks of the River Alyn with a visit to the ruins of the 13thC Caergwrle Castle. Kingfishers may be seen along the riverside. The climb to the hilltop castle is quite steep. Bring packed lunch, stout footwear, waterproofs and binoculars. Cars leave Prestatyn C.P. at 9.30am or meet at the Old Castle Inn, Caergwrle SJ305575 at 10.15am.

6. Saturday, July 11th                                     EXCURSION

 ‘STEAM AND SLATE’                          ( Pick up times A)

WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAY & DOROTHEA QUARRY.

After arriving at Rhyd Ddu a steam train ride including the newly opened section of the Welsh Highland Railway will go to Hen Hafod by way of the scenic Aberglaslyn Pass and then return. Refreshments will be available on the train. Train fare - £8.80.

After a picnic lunch a walk of about 3 miles in the Dorothea Quarry will pass many historical relics including the housing containing a Cornish beam engine. Then by coach to Glynllifon where refreshments will be available before returning home.

Packed lunch essential; stout footwear and raingear.

 BARBARA ALLEN NATURE WALK                  4½ miles

ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER CLWYD

A walk to observe the flora and fauna along the river side from Rhuddlan Bridge to Rhyl on the left bank and returning by the other bank.

Bring packed lunch, strong footwear and waterproofs.

Cars leave Prestatyn C.P. at 10.00am or meet at the town end of the footbridge of RhuddlanBridge SJ021780 at 10.15am. Park in the town car parks.

8. Saturday, August 8th                                 EXCURSION

‘A PARK FOR THE PEOPLE’              (Pick-up times B)

A warden-led visit to Birkenhead Park - the first municipal park in Britain dating from 1847 and now Grade I listed. The easy walk in the park will be of about two miles with many points of historical and botanical interest. Lunch may be taken at the café in the park. In mid-afternoon the coach will leave for Birkenhead Priory to explore the 12thC remains.

A stop for tea and scones at £2.75 will be made at the Woodhey Hotel on the way home.

9. Saturday, August 22nd                                  WALK

A WALK WITH A VIEW                                          3 miles

A pleasant walk on the Little Orme including the little known NWWT nature reserve of Rhiw Ledyn at Penrhyn Bay with spectacular views and an abundance of flora and fauna. Paths are a bit rough with a couple of short steep sections. Bring packed lunch, stout footwear, waterproofs and binoculars.

Cars leave Prestatyn Church car park at 10.15am or meet at the junction of Fynnon Sadwrn Lane and the Colwyn Road (promenade) SH804823 at 11.00am. Parking on the roadsides.

10. Saturday, September 12th                     EXCURSION

LYMEPARK                                          (Pick-up times B)

Travelling direct to LymePark, coffee will be available on arrival at about 11am. Originally Tudor, this National Trust mansion now resembles an Italianate palace and is full of magnificent furniture, paintings, tapestries and an important collection of clocks. Several gardens with optional walks to the ‘Cage’ - an 18thC hunting tower - and the ‘Lantern’ folly.

There is a licensed restaurant and a coffee shop.  Group admission £6.90, National Trust members free.

11. Saturday, September 19th                         WALK

PANTON’S COP AND BAGILLT COAST          3½ miles

A coastal walk along the 18thC artificial embankment of Panton’s Cop and then along the formerly heavily industrialised coastal strip passing the remains of over a dozen sites of historical interest and finishing at Flint Castle. Mostly flat paths but rough in places so walking boots are recommended.

Cars leave Prestatyn C.P. at 12.20pm or meet at Lyon’s Den C.P. SJ212762 at the junction of A548 and A5026 at 12.55pm. The return from the end of the walk will be by bus – bring your pass if you have one.

‘AN INSIGHT INTO WAT’S DYKE’

 2. Saturday 17th October                                WALK

A CIRCULAR WALK FROM NORTHOP            4 miles

INCLUDING PART OF WAT’S DYKE

This walk is associated with the lecture given on 3rd  October and will include parts of Wat’s Dyke itself and many other points of interest.  From Northop it will go round the golf course, passing near Soughton Hall and into the village of Sychdyn before crossing the main road westwards.  Going along quiet lanes and through fields the route continues along the line of the dyke.  The return will pass along the historic High Street of Northop, once a major coaching route.  There are several gates and stiles, and it may be muddy. Refreshment may be had in the village pubs at the end of the walk.

 4. Saturday 14th November                             Walk

GARDENS AND WOODLAND AT ERDDIG                3 miles

An Autumn walk led by the Head Gardener of Erddig, Mr Glyn Smith, giving his overview of the management of various aspects of this National Trust estate, including access to the apple display.  After a picnic lunch there will be a walk of about an hour in the grounds to look at the motte and bailey, together with parts of Wat’s Dyke.

Bring a packed lunch.  The café will be open.

Admission fee £3.00 for the guided walk for all participants including NT members.

GREENFIELD VALLEY AND DOCK                                4 miles

An easy walk on good paths through GreenfieldValleyHeritagePark and to Greenfield’s once busy dock on the Dee. The trail passes ancient monuments and remnants of industrial history providing an opportunity to see wildlife in woodland, reservoir and river.                                                       
Some inclines and steps but no stiles.

Bring a packed lunch.

Reports and election of Officers and Committee Members.  Please endeavour to attend.

Following the Annual General Meeting there will be a Social Afternoon at which Members and Guests will be welcome.  Tickets for this will be available for £2.00 at the door and it will include afternoon tea, quizzes, photo displays, raffles and various stalls.

9. Saturday 6th February                                  Walk

MORFA MADRYN NATURE RESERVE                       4 miles
AND LLANFAIRFECHAN

A coastal walk leads to Glan y Môr Elias and the Morfa Madryn Nature Reserve with pools, saltmarsh and bird-watching hides.  Splendid views over Traeth Lafan and along the coast.  Some of the geology and botany of the area will be described along the way.  Returning to the village a guided walk will show some of its historical and architectural features.

Refreshments may be purchased in the cafés near the car park at the end of the walk.

Bring a packed lunch.  Binoculars recommended.

FOREST, MOOR AND WATER                                      4 miles

A walk in Llandegla Forest which is a commercially run woodland with marked trails. Following a short stop for coffee at the log-built Visitors’ Centre, the route goes through a variety of habitats and passes near the haunts of the legendary Black Grouse.  There will be fine views across the moorland if the visibility is good.  Some climbs with paths stony in places.

Boots essential and poles or a stick will be an advantage.

Bring a packed lunch.

SPRINGTIME IN COED Y FELIN                                 2 miles

This is a North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve which has important woodland and grassland habitat.  It is located on limestone while other minerals in the area include lead ores and clay used for brickmaking.

Bring a packed lunch and binoculars.  There are some inclines, but not too steep!

15. Saturday 1st May                                         Walk

CWM IDWAL IN THE ICE AGE AND SINCE           3½ miles

Starting from the car park at the head of the Nant Ffrancon Pass the walk is into and around the famous cirque, or corrie, of Cwm Idwal, mainly over rough stone paths.  A stop will be made at the base of the Idwal Slabs before returning by a low level route around the western side of the lake.  The main points of interest along this route are the stark effects that the last Ice Age had on the surroundings, and the stunning vista of the Cwm with its lake.  Before leaving, a short walk from the car park will provide great views down the Nant Ffrancon Pass and of Llyn Ogwen.

A packed lunch and drink are essential.  Snacks and drinks are available from the kiosk at the car park.

LECTURES: These will be held in the Paterson Hall behind Capel Dyserth Chapel, High Street, Dyserth at 2:30pm unless otherwise stated.

WALKS: Strong shoes or boots should be worn on all walks unless otherwise stated.  Warm and waterproof clothing is advisable. No dogs are allowed on walks.

Distances given for walks are approximate.

Cars meet at Prestatyn Church Car Park.  Members with cars are asked to provide transport for passengers, who are requested to have the exact car fare for the event ready to give to the driver.

A Mobile Telephone – number 07951515785 - and a First Aid Box are carried on all walks and excursions.

LIBRARY: The Club Library is in the Vestry next to the Paterson Hall and is open on lecture afternoons, or by arrangement by phoning 01745 571349.

VISITORS: Visitors and Members’ Guests are welcome at all walks and lectures (£2 fee for lectures).

CLUB COMMITTEE: Nominations for Committee can be made in writing at any time and must include the name and address of the proposer and seconder. They must be in the hands of the General Secretary at least 14 days before the Annual General Meeting.

The agreement of the nominee must be obtained beforehand.  Though not necessary, suitable nomination forms will also be available at indoor meetings or on request.
